For this week’s Barbecue Product review, we are going to be studying and bringing out the cook book titled: “If You Can’t Stand the Heat: A New Orleans Firefighters Cookbook,” by a New Orleans firefighter named Robert Medina.
Grilling with Rich with The Book!
Before we start we are going to give you some background on the author:
Robert Medina was raised in New Orleans around family and friends where cooking is a way of life. They still get together to watch their beloved New Orleans Saints and have tailgate cook-a-thons that would rival anything, anywhere. Every sporting event, family event, or even a non-event is turned into an excuse for a party. It’s the New Orleans way! Robert spent nearly twenty-four years as a firefighter in New Orleans, where he took over duties as the firehouse cook after honing skills he learned from his predecessors. To this day, he sticks with the credo that if you can satisfy a firefighter’s palate, you can satisfy anyone’s. Since retiring from the department, Robert Medina has written the book Freefall, in addition to this cookbook. He and his wife, Lori, enjoy the best of all worlds as they split their time between the beautiful beaches of Destin, Florida, and their hometown of New Orleans.
Okay now that we got some background done with, it’s time for the review:
What we liked about the book was the common theme throughout the book was obviously the use of spice. Looking through the book every recipe had some sort of spice involved in ranging from Jalapeno peppers to even a seasoning pack that you would be picking up at the local supermarket. Another great aspect of the book that we liked about the book was also the New Orleans influence in a lot of the recipes. To us there wasn’t ONE recipe that didn’t include some sort of Louisiana influence in the recipes.
If you want to bring the heat from Louisiana to your kitchen table through the grill we suggest picking up a copy of this great Louisiana Barbecue Cookbook
