Pigtail Brands Barbecue Sauce – Another Great South Carolina Barbecue Sauce

by Richard Wachtel on Sep 14, 2011

For this week’s Barbecue sauce review, I am going to review another South Carolina Barbecue Sauce: Big Ed’s Heirloom Barbecue Sauce. Like I always do with the products that we review, I am going to give some background on the barbecue sauce before we get to the review.

Pigtail Brands flagship product, Big Ed’s Heirloom Barbecue Sauce did not get its moniker of “The Specialty Of The South” for no reason. This is a robust, tangy vinegar based heirloom barbecue sauce & marinade with just the perfect hint of pepper & a slight sweet undertone produced in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. A 30+ year family recipe to perfectly accent and bring out, not overpower, the flavor of your pork, steak, poultry, seafood, wild game and everything in between. It has even been used as a salad dressing. Gluten free, fat free, cholesterol free and preservative free. It’s just that good! For years this sauce has made appearances at local gatherings amongst family and friends with everyone always inquiring as to why we have yet to market the the product to the public. That time has come. The story of this delicious heirloom bbq sauce dates back to 1980 in Gifford, South Carolina. It was first produced in small, specialty batches at Big Ed’s Barbecue Restaurant & Pigtail Hunt Camp deep in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry. The local gentlemen would gather around after days of hunting, family activities, & the like to tell stories while enjoying the delicious sauce and ice cold beverages. Good times, great friends & a savory heirloom barbecue sauce. Uses: For optimal results, baste desired meat, fish, or whatever you like with Big Ed’s Heirloom Barbecue Sauce for 10-15 minutes before cooking is complete.  Dip or brush once more for added flavor! Great as a marinade too! We are also very proud to be deemed a South Carolina Certified Product by the South Carolina Department Of Agriculture as well as very involved members of the South Carolina Specialty Foods Association & the Lowcountry Local Initiative.

Big Ed's Heirlom Barbecue Sauces Big Ed’s Heirloom Barbecue Sauce Bottle Review: Like I have always said here on Grilling with Rich any barbecue sauce that has a white label, gets an extra start in my book. I have also previously stated I am not sure why I love barbecue sauces that have a white label, but I do. So note to barbecue sauce makers, if you add a white label to your barbecue sauce bottle, you will have a special place in my heart!! Thoughts on Big Ed’s Heirloom Barbecue Sauce: So let me start off by saying that obviously there are alot of different styles of barbecue sauces. I think that since I have started reviewing barbecue sauces I have gotten a real great glimpse of all different kinds of sauces. Some of them being gourmet sauces, traditional barbecue sauces with a lot of smokiness, sweet and tangy, honey mustard and vinegar based. I also want to say that I am not a huge fan of vinegar based sauces, they just don’t do it for me until now! I really liked this sauce and could see how people who love vinegar based sauces would really enjoy this sauce. This sauce would go perfect with that pulled pork sandwich that has been sitting in the smoker for hours! It had a really nice body of flavoring. You could really taste and smell the vinegar. Overall I give this vinegar based sauce two grill lids up!!
